Fish with the Moon

With your fly fishing network guide Jon Book.

We fished untill dark and watched the moon rise through the pines. The only sound was a small eddy that had circled an old tree stump just up stream from us.

Small flies were starting to rise from the surface of the river. At first, there were just a few, but soon it was like a winter snow with the flakes rising instead of falling.

We could hear some good fish rising, but our match was just not working. My partner suggested we make a change to weighted nymphs and bring them up from the bottom with a thatching motion.

My first cast and retrieve brought results; a beautiful 13inch brook trout hit only on the upward swing of the fly. A simple change made all the difference!

We walked the well-lit trail through the woods with the moon on our backs.
